Congratulations to the first of our September Garden of the Month winners, Jim and Holly Dudley. Like all good gardens, they say theirs at 2577 Oakwood Ave. is a work in progress. They have worked as a team during their eight years at the address. Holly does much of the gardening. She inherited her love of it from her mother and grandfather, who owned a landscaping company. Jim lends his muscle for the heavy work. They grow a variety of shrubs and perennials, including hostas, roses, hydrangeas and, Holly’s favorite, peonies. Nice work, Jim and Holly!

Don’t look now, but our second Garden of the Month winner for September comes with … a generous helping of fresh veggies! How fun is that?
Vegetable gardens often get tucked away from public view, but Steve & Mollie Toonen-Hayon wanted to keep the sunny spot in their backyard as a green space for their children and neighborhood kids to play, so they put the homegrown fruits and vegetables out front at 559 Somerset Drive. You’ll find peppers, pumpkins, tomatoes, beans, beets and carrots waiting their turn to be harvested in a plot off the side of the driveway.
A mix of perennials and annuals give their yard all kinds of flower power, too. We love the extra pops of color from the cheerful blue shutters and matching mailbox and the bright green outdoor bench for two. Did we mention Steve made that and also the wooden planter boxes?
Four rain barrels placed at the corners of the house help to keep everything watered, especially useful during a dry summer like this.
Congratulations on a garden good enough to eat, Steve and Mollie. We like your style! Thanks for making Allouez so inviting.

Before we wrap up our Gardens of the Month for 2023, we have one final September winner to share.
If you’ve been to the Allouez Village Shoppes recently, you’ve noticed that 801 Hoffman Road has a new look, including sidewalks and landscaping. Beds planted with sedums, ornamental grasses and catmint caught our eye, along with the sizable concrete planters with colorful annual flowers.
Manager Tyler Jorgensen said Slusarek Construction in Suamico provided grading assistance with the improvements. If you haven’t seen them for yourself, pop by Allouez Village Shoppes to visit one of the businesses that call the complex home:
Pro Fitness Green Bay
THE ULTIMATE CLOSET
3D Brows and Wellness LLC
Chalet Designs Salon & Boutique
The Village Grille
Sovereign Financial Group, LLC
Unique Alterations
In addition to our residential garden honorees, it’s always a pleasure to recognize local businesses that make the village inviting with their curb appeal. Congratulations!
