Leo and Jan Welter

We are off and running with another season of showcasing beautiful yards in Allouez. We’re pleased to name Leo and Jan Welter as our June Garden of the Month winners.

Their landscape at 1664 Patton St. is a meticulous display of colors, shapes and textures with manicured shrubs, loads of hostas and lush ground covers. Annuals in the window boxes and in ceramic planters on the front porch add more pops of color and interest. A Japanese maple at the front entrance makes a grand statement. Plantings stretch out along both sides of the property. And can we talk about all those crisp edges?

The Welters spend many hours each week tending their gardens, and the results speak for themselves. Congratulations, Leo and Jan. Thank you for taking such pride in your yard so it can be enjoyed by all who pass by.

Jeane Smits and Chad Biemeret

Congratulations to our second Garden of the Month winners for June … Jeane Smits and Chad Biemeret.

When Chad bought the house at 631 Simonet St. from his grandfather, the front yard consisted of several trees and three shrubs. His grandpa wasn’t into landscaping, but you don’t have to look twice to see that Chad and Jeane sure have a knack for it.

They’ve transformed the corner lot into pretty views from all three sides and their own little private oasis on the back deck. A busy couple looking for some wow without a lot of daily upkeep, they planted low-maintenance perennials like hostas, sedums, daylilies, shrub roses, lamb’s ear, goatsbeard and turtlehead (we’re sensing an animal theme here). They add mixed container plantings of annuals for extra color.

It all has a peaceful, easy feeling, thanks to the Buddha statue on the front porch, the sound of water from birdbath fountains and, of course, the gardeners themselves. Well done!
